Newport Gwent Dragons have suspended head coach Paul Turner from duty "pending a hearing into disciplinary matters".

Turner had recently come under fire for an outspoken response after flanker Dan Lydiate returned from Wales fitness tests having sustained an injury, leading the club to issue a statement on his behalf in which he apologised for the comments.

Assistant coaches Danny Wilson and Shaun Connor will take charge of the upcoming LV= Cup games against Sale Sharks and the Scarlets while chief executive Mike Jenkins conducts the inquiry.

A statement from the club read: "Newport Gwent Dragons head coach Paul Turner has been relieved of his duties pending a hearing into disciplinary matters.

"As previously announced, the region's LV= Cup games against Sale Sharks this weekend and next weekend's game against the Scarlets will be led by the assistant coaching team as part of the region's ongoing policy of coach development.

"There will be no further comment on this issue until disciplinary proceedings have been completed."
