Dungannon girls seal Schools' glory

Grosvenor GS 8 RS Dungannon 11

By Ronnie Ingram

In only their second year in the Danske Bank Girls' Schools' Cup competition, and with 450 pupils and staff in attendance, Royal School Dungannon clinched the trophy following a dominant second half against Grosvenor at the Kingspan Stadium.

With one point for a try and no conversions, the Belfast team started the stronger and took an early 3-1 advantage.

Gradually Dungannon came more into the tie with their captain and hooker Grace Shrestha, who was a member of the Ulster Under-18 squad that won the Inter-provincial title, winning plenty of possession.

With the help of two Zoe Henderson tries and one from Emily Carson, Dungannon got back to 3-3 at the interval.

After the restart they upped their game and suddenly Grosvenor were 9-5 in arrears.

Zoe Henderson again showed her speed and determination with two more tries while Sarah Shrestha also had two. Vice-captain Lucy Turkington, Laura Saunders, Katie Burns and Holly Henderson were the other scorers.

Grosvenor winger Sophie Larmour ran in three well executed tries while their others came from Holly Brannigan (2), Grace McCluney, Annie McKirgan and Fern Wilson.

Dungannon, who previously eliminated holders Enniskillen Royal 3-2, deserved their victory.
