Clermont back in quarters as they claim top spot in Ulster's pool

Bordeaux 6 Clermont 9

Clermont ensured they would top Pool 5 with a game to spare after coming out on top in a dour contest over Bordeaux at the Stade Chaban Delmas yesterday.

After the first pool meeting produced 11 tries and 82 points, the Top 14 rivals offered little excitement this time around with three penalties from the boot of Camille Lopez enough to end the host's European ambitions for this season.

Former Leinster playmaker Ian Madigan kicked both penalties for Bordeaux but it was not enough to save his side from a second home defeat of the campaign after also losing to Exeter last time out.

It could have been very different had they been able to take advantage of two early yellow cards but, despite Clermont playing seven minutes with 13, two penalties a piece saw the first-half end 6-6.

After the turn, a Lopez penalty on the hour mark was enough to seal the deal.

Bordeaux now travel to Kingspan Stadium with nothing to play for and with minds surely already back on a Top 14 campaign that could still bring a play-off place.
