Fijian Olympic champion Mata joins Edinburgh

Edinburgh have signed one of Fiji's Olympic heroes.

Lock Viliame 'Bill' Mata joins the Guinness PRO12 club on a two-year contract weeks after winning a gold medal in Rio.

The 24-year-old scored a try in Fiji's 43-7 triumph over Great Britain in the rugby sevens final in Brazil.

Mata said: "My goal was to win the gold medal for Fiji and we got it. Now my goal is to perform well for my new team.

"I am excited about signing for Edinburgh Rugby and am looking forward to playing for the club.

"I am also excited about arriving in the city and meeting my new team-mates."

The former rugby league player, who stands 6ft 5in tall, has scored 11 tries in nine sevens events for Fiji.

Head coach Alan Solomons said: "We are delighted to welcome Bill to the club. He is big, powerful and explosive and I believe he will add huge value to the team."
