Gopperth inspires Newcastle comeback

Jimmy Gopperth grabbed a relegation lifeline for Newcastle with a nerve-tingling 76th-minute penalty as they recorded a 22-19 victory over Sale at Kingston Park.

Gopperth's strike saw Newcastle battle back from 19-12 down to beat the Sharks and cut the gap at the bottom of the Aviva Premiership between themselves and Wasps to just four points.

Sale scored three terrific first-half tries from Johnny Leota, James Gaskell, and Rob Miller - with Nick MacLeod adding two conversions - but led only 19-12 at half-time after giving away and hatful of penalties which led to a warning from referee David Rose. Tim Swinson scored a try for the home side after the break, which Gopperth converted, before his late fifth penalty clinched victory.
