Harlequins superiority shows

The difference in the standard of rugby between Minor East 2 and Minor North was cruelly exposed when Belfast Harlequins IV eliminated Ballyshannon from the MacCambley Cup 28-5 on Saturday.

This was only one of two fixtures played in Minor rugby, the other being in the Butler Shield when UUC III defeated Finn Valley 32-12.

Quins, with only three victories in their Section and lying in the penultimate place, packed too much punch for the North joint leaders with only one league defeat and a draw.

Sustained pressure led to an early try when flanker Sam Thomas crashed over for Jonathan Watson to convert.

A Watson penalty made the score 10-0 at the interval.

The expected comeback came when, following a speculative kick down the wing, the ball was grounded behind the line.

Out-half Watson then further stamped his authority when he crossed for the third try and added the extras. The win was sealed when skipper for the day Kevin Carruthers touched down.
