Heaslip in clear after citing

Published 01/12/2009

South African rugby's international reputation was in further ridicule last night when their citing of Irish number eight Jamie Heaslip for allegedly eye-gouging flanker Heinrich Brussow during Saturday's 15-10 win at Croke Park was thrown out by the Scottish citing commissioner Douglas Hunter.

The Irish camp were surprised to learn yesterday that the Springboks, whose raising of a disciplinary issue was unprecedented, had raised the issue of an alleged eye-gouging as well as a number of other referrals, according to an IRFU statement.

Hunter reviewed the match video at length throughout the day before refusing to cite any player.
