Exeter loan signing Peter Kimlin's spell with the Aviva Premiership club has been brought to an abrupt end.
The Australian lock faces up to 12 weeks' sidelined after damaging knee ligaments following a collision in training with his Exeter team-mate Paul McKenzie.
Kimlin will now head back to Canberra-based franchise the Brumbies to undergo a rehabilitation programme ahead of this season's Super 15 competition, which starts in February.
"It's a frustrating time for Peter," said Exeter head coach Rob Baxter. "He came over and we anticipated him being involved in a bit more rugby.
"He had settled in very well and was a popular member of the squad - he's a good guy and a very good player.
"I think he would have featured a fair bit over the next few weeks, but these things happen.
"It was a training ground incident, he clashed with a player on his own team in a game of touch, and sadly that is it for him now."
