Lamont to make second Glasgow debut

Rory Lamont

Rory Lamont will make his second Glasgow Warriors debut on Sunday in the Heineken Cup Pool Three clash with Montpellier.

Lamont, who recently re-signed for the Warriors after negotiating his release from Toulon, was preferred as the additional Heineken Cup player to fellow new recruit David Lemi and will start on the left wing.

Scotland international Lamont is one of 13 changes to the team which drew 14-14 at Newport Gwent Dragons in the RaboDirect PRO12 last weekend.

Scotland fly-half Ruaridh Jackson drops to the bench, while there is no place in the 23-man squad for either number eight Johnnie Beattie or tighthead prop Moray Low as the Warriors seek to follow up their dramatic win over Bath last month against the French side.

Only Peter Murchie, who moves from full-back to outside centre, and prop Jon Welsh are retained, with Scotland internationals Graeme Morrison, Richie Gray, Alastair Kellock and John Barclay among those drafted in.

Lamont last played in Scotland's Rugby World Cup group game against Georgia, whose star player, Mamuka Gorgodze, plays his club rugby for Montpellier.

Head coach Sean Lineen recognises the size of the challenge for his Glasgow side as they seek to build on the last eight games, which has featured just one defeat.

Lineen told www.glasgowwarriors.org: "Winning the Montpellier game is vital to our hopes of progressing from the pool.

"We're coming into this game with a decent run of form at our backs, but we're aware that anything other than our best right across the field is likely to see us come up short this time.

"Montpellier are a hugely-physical team with pace and power in the backs and some real tough customers up front. Any side that reaches the Top 14 final, as they did last season, is seriously good by definition, and it's up to us to prove once again that we can live with that sort of outfit."
