O'Brien cleared of charge

Sean O'Brien

Leinster flanker Sean O'Brien has been cleared of a charge of making contact with the eye area of an opponent by an Irish Rugby Football Union disciplinary panel.

The 23-year-old was cited after allegedly making contact with the eye area of a Benetton Treviso player as the Irish visitors suffered a shock 29-13 Magners League defeat last Saturday.

If found guilty the Ireland international, who has three caps to his name, could have faced a lengthy ban but he will now be available for Friday night's clash with Edinburgh after the panel ruled that he did not deliberately make contact with the eye of the Treviso player.

An IRFU statement read: "The panel noted that O'Brien moved his right hand from the Treviso player's collar across his face to grab his scrum cap.

"The panel was satisfied that there had been no deliberate contact with the eye area, no injury whatsoever sustained and no player reaction was observed.

"The panel concluded that the player was not guilty of the offence charged and he is free to continue playing."
