One-week ban for Springbok lock

South Africa lock Flip van der Merwe has received a one-week ban for a dangerous tackle on Australia wing Joe Tomane during last Saturday's Rugby Championship clash in Cape Town.

Van der Merwe was sin-binned following the 38th-minute incident, but a SANZAR (South Africa, New Zealand and Australia rugby) disciplinary panel ruled on Monday that he deserved further punishment.

It means he will miss next weekend's Championship decider against New Zealand in Johannesburg, when South Africa need a bonus point - and to deny New Zealand collecting any in the process - to land the title.

Franco van der Merwe, who is no relation to Flip, has been called into the Springboks squad preparing to face New Zealand.
