Harlequins made hard work of a 28-20 victory that ought to have been more emphatic given their possession and Newcastle's indiscipline.

Newcastle put themselves under enormous pressure, playing 30 minutes of the 80 with 14 men after having three players sin-binned in the course of an hour.

Micky Young , Redford Pennycook and captain Tim Swinson were all shown the yellow card by referee David Rose as Sam Smith, Chris York and penalty try racked up the points for Quins. Ben Urdapiletta came off the bench for the home side and kicked a conversion and three penalties after replacing fly-half Rory Clegg, who converted Smith's opener.

Pennycook and Charlie Amesbury went over for Newcastle. Both tries were converted by Jeremy Manning, who also slotted two penalties
