A grand night of champions in store as Magners League final date is set

The Magners League Grand Final, which could yet involve Ulster, has been set for the same night as football's European Champions League final.

Saturday, May 28 promises to be a momentous night of TV sport with the Magners League final, at 5.05pm, followed by the football showpiece from Wembley at 7.45pm.

Dates and kick-off times for the Magners play-off semi-finals have also been scheduled. The first semi-final will start at 7.05pm on Friday, May 13 with the second at 6.30pm on Saturday 14th.

There are five Magners League rounds remaining now that the RBS 6 Nations has come to a conclusion and there is still all to play for in one of the most competitive league seasons on record.

Table-topping Munster have a nine point lead over reigning champions Ospreys in second, but the 2003 and 2009 winners still have to travel to Wales twice in the closing stages to meet both the Ospreys and Cardiff Blues.

Munster also host arch-rivals Leinster and Connacht at home in a run-in that could still see them come under pressure for top spot and a home tie in the semi-finals.

The Grand Final will be played at the home venue of the highest rank team reaching last two.

“We have an incredible final five rounds to go in the Magners League and it is anyone’s guess who will fill the top four places. There are still seven sides within striking distance and the battle for home advantage is set to go down to the wire,” said Celtic Rugby chairman Andy Irvine.

“We have some world class fixtures to come before the end of the regular season and then three fantastic matches to determine who will follow the Ospreys as the Grand Final champions.

“Ulster and the 2009 champions Leinster, both still in the race for Heineken Cup glory, are preparing for their final assault “
