Rainey plot win against Instonians to avenge league woe

Rainey travel to Instonians in the second round of the AIB All Ireland Cup hoping to avenge last week’s home league defeat.

Rhys Botha’s side lost by a point despite a late comeback and club spokesman Arnold McLean is expecting another tight tussle.

“Last week was a very good game, they have sharp backs and their backs were impressive.

“We struggled a bit in the lineout but scrummed well.

“They defended well and we were happy with our performance,” stated McLean.

Andy Kerr faces a late fitness test while scrum half Michael Wilson could start. Michael Glancy comes back into contention.

“We’ll be as near to full strength as we can, it would be nice to get a cup run as the winners of this tie are at home to Division One side UCD and that would be good for the club. We looking forward to going to Shaw’s Bridge as it’s a nice place to play at," concluded McLean.

Inst coach Clem Boyd faces an injury crisis in the front row. Chris Schofield and Gary Mitchell are both missing as well as seven other props.

Boyd is hoping to have Chris Goode fit while Neil Simpson starts.

John Gardiner and Kenny Morton start in the second row while Mark Wilson is among the replacements.

James McCullough gets a chance in the back row. Behind the scrum Boyd has no injury worries with Johnny Watt continuing at outhalf and Niall Malone at full back.

Malone and Queen’s also meet for a second consecutive week.

Malone captain Glen Moore is a major doubt with an ankle injury for the Gibson Park clash.

Queen’s have been dealt a blow with the news hooker Gareth Megaw will be missing for up to six weeks with a broken thumb. Prop Alex Houston is ruled out with a neck injury so Chris Nash could start in the front row.

Belfast Harlequins host Banbridge in the other all Ulster tie. Graham Jewhurst is unavailable for the home side so Alistair Heatlie and Neil McComb start in the second row while Andrew Gillespie, Colin Atkinson and Chris McCarey form the back row and Keith Pyper moves to full back.
