Barney McGonigle: Inst out to down the Dubs
Friday, 27 November 2009
Royal Belfast Academical Institution will be hoping to match old rivals Methody by claiming the scalp of Osbourne Park guests Belvedere College tomorrow morning.
With the famous Dubliners, whose coaches include former-Irish international forward, Gabriel Fulcher, having lost to MCB, that will motivate RBAI.
Belvedere boast a number of Leinster Schools’ representative players, including James Hart and Michael Oyaga.
But RBAI have their fair share of Ulster Schools’ counterparts, although they will be without centre Michael McAuley, who is on Irish Schools’ Under 19s duty against Australia today at UCD.
Alistair Andress, Michael Kilpatrick, Kevin McLean, Matthew McGuigan and Zach Welshman are available and RBAI fingers are crossed that captain Jack Carlisle will be fit.
Another of tomorrow morning’s big games is the Wallace HS versus Methody meeting at Clonevin Park.
Adding spice to that one is the fact that, last weekend, Wallace drew with Castleknock College, who, a week earlier, had inflicted Methody’s first defeat.
With four players — Conor Carey, Rory Harrison, Paddy Jackson and Blane McIlroy — away with the Irish Schools, coach Nicki Wells may use some of his starlets.
Wallace’s pack earned the plaudits in that 5-5 draw with Castleknock and the Lisburn side will hope for more of the same from Stewart Evans, Daniel Henry, Kyle McCall and Chris Spence.
Belfast HS, whose scheduled meeting with Ballymena Academy was washed out last week, welcome RS Armagh.
The hosts know that will be a huge challenge. However, in Robbie Fryars, Ryan McGonigle and Ian Weir they have players capable of testing RS Armagh who’s date with Dublin High School was rained off.
Armagh will look to their front row of Jonathan Dixon, Andrew Smyth and Simon Carlisle to lay the foundations for yet another victory.
Fellow Royals, Portora, who lost 12-3 to RBAI last time out, host Limavady GS and with players like James Brady, James Gormley and Matthew Tansley on hand, the home side will fancy their chances.
But with the Roesiders having Robin Craig, Conor Crampsie and Shay McIntosh able to provide ball for backs like Peter Wilson, Nathan Barr and Allen Robinson to exploit, they are a very useful side.
So, too, are unbeaten Bangor GS.
Tomorrow they host Friends’ School who lost narrowly to Belfast Royal Academy last weekend.
Bangor will be without prop Philip Whyte, another on Irish Schools duty, but they do have Stuart McCloskey and James Henley available.
The hosts, rightly, will treat Friends with real respect.
Beaten just twice this season, Friends have talent up front and behind.
Ross McCaughey, Jonny MacCorkell, David McGuigan and Alisdair Trimble are forwards capable of supplying backs like Michael Cochrane, Rory McIvor and Paddy Pringle.
Belfast Royal Academy, who were Friends’ most recent victims, go to Regent House who beat Down HS last time out, with skipper Alistair Lockhart starring.
The Mawhinneys, Paul and Nicholas, and Thomas Slane carry Regent’s biggest threat, while BRA skipper Conor Spence, David Cartmill, Marc Glover, Ian Henderson and Callum Leckey are the hosts’ dangermen.
Down HS host a Portadown College side in need of a boost, for although they made Sullivan Upper dig for victory, overall their performances have been disappointing.
Mark Beggs, Daniel Coulter, Chris Goodland and Peter Liggett are PC’s impact players, their Down equivalents being being Aaron Cairns, Andy Curran, John Donnan, Stuart Orr and Jonny Rea.
Grosvenor GS are at home to Banbridge Academy and having pushed Larne GS all the way they will have to maintain that spirit against a side going well.
Grosvenor feel they ought to have beaten Larne, for which reason Mark Foster, Jonny Taylor, Matthew Little and Chris Quinn will hope to see their side go one better tomorrow.
That will be a difficult task, for with James Gibson, Michael Runciman, Shandon Scott and Mark Sinton on duty, Banbridge’s goal will be to bounce back following last weekend’s defeat by Campbell College.
Improving Campbell, with skipper Cory Tipping leading by example, entertain Sullivan.
Boys like Chris Best, Ben Duckett, Paul Hunter and Rory Scholes are responding to their captain’s leadership, so with the Sullivan pack having shone in seeing off Portadown College, victory will go to the winners of the forward battle.
Strabane GS, who have been inactive recently, entertain Lurgan College in a warm-up for next Saturday’s Northern Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup match against Antrim GS.
Lurgan, who lost to Friends’ in their last game, have promising players like Gavin Barr, Peter Cullen and Andy Stevenson, but the visitors must perform if they are to win at a notoriously tough venue.
Ballyclare HS, whose forwards laid the foundations for success against Foyle and Londonderry College, must match that display tomorrow against Dalriada School.
Ballyclare’s Kirk Johnston and Peter Kennedy will be looking for quality ball so that players like Luc Baillie and Jonny Brown can test Dalriada, who will hope to see Lee Ballentine, Jonny McLaughlin, David Campbell and Ewan Strang, who scored twice, repeat the performances they served up against Carrickfergus GS whom they beat 25-0.
Carrick face Larne GS in an East Antrim derby, hoping Andrew McIlroy, Marc Gordon, Russell Stockman, Ross Davidson and Ross Moore can deliver as the did against Portadown College.
Larne, still without Ulster Schools’ centre, Stuart McIlwaine, will need big performances from Billy Brown, Tom Huddleson, Aaron McBride and James Mitchell if they are to have any chance.
Foyle and Londonderry College, narrowly beaten by Ballyclare HS, host Ballymena Academy who have captain, George Dennison, back after injury.
