Gonzales is Wellington’s hero

Lurgan College 9 Wellington 31

A spectacular performance by Tom Gonzales saw Wellington into the third round.

Gonzales, scored twice, had a big part to play in a third and while out-half Johnny Armstrong kicked a penalty after only four minutes before the big No.8 and captain picked up and crashed over for his first try.

Gonzales then showed his strength for the second and when he was brought down just short, Johnny McCullough was on hand to add the third. Armstrong converted them all before Peter Cullen hit a penalty for Lurgan making the interval score 24-3.

Cullen was successful with two more penalties but Wellington put the issue beyond doubt in the closing minutes when centre Philip Nann took advantage of Lurgan’s incessant attacking to run in for Armstrong to convert.

Peter Chambers, the Wellington coach said: “After those Cup games we are battle hardened. We kept to our game plan, defended well and No.10. Johnny Armstrong controlled, kicking well from hand and ground.”
