Regent move into gear against plucky Coleraine to book a tie with Wallace

Coleraine always trailed in this tie as the seeded team progressed for an away tie against Wallace High.

Coleraine kept in the encounter for the first quarter but once the visitors went in front there was no stopping them.

The first try came after 17 minutes following sustained pressure when scrum-half Alastair Lockhart broke from a ruck to touch down but a few minutes later Coleraine equalised.

A quick line-out was taken and Peter Farrell linked with Ritchie McMaster who sent out a long pass to Andrew McKnight and he made a break before his grubber kick was grounded by Adam Brown.

A couple of weak tackles allowed Regent to take a 10-5 interval lead. Against the run of play Regent kicked through and the ball awkwardly bounced between two players allowing left winger Johnny Carmichael to score.

In the second period Neil Armstrong kicked an easy penalty and McMaster, who was not having one of his best games, brought the score back to 11-13 with two penalties.

With 10 minutes remaining Regent had a vital try. Their pack had dominated possession and when they broke upfield, following a loose home pass, their forwards from a ‘catch and drive' crashed over the line for second row Matthew Wallace to score and Armstrong to add the points. Coleraine kept going with Patrick Farrell at scrum-half having a big impact while second row Nathan Rankin put in a lot of good work.

They did win a couple ‘against the head' but it was an off day for Coleraine as they did not play up to expectation.

Regent coach Eric Sinnamon was pleased with the outcome.

“Coleraine came back at us but we had the overall strength to absorb their pressure and, by the close, I feel we were the better team,” he said.
