Stringer’s days are numbered

Published 14/01/2009 | 00:00

Ireland and Munster scrum-half Peter Stringer has hinted that he could be set for a move away from the province when his current contract expires in 2010.

The diminutive half-back holds Ireland's record for most appearances in the No 9 jersey but has fallen behind Tomas O'Leary in the pecking order at provincial level while he also has to contend with Eoin Reddan, Isaac Boss and O'Leary for the Irish jersey.

"I'd always consider weighing up your options when it comes about. Whether staying here or going away, there's always options being thrown at you," he said. "There's another good while left in my contract but when the time comes you have to see what's best for you."

Stringer, who turned 31 in December, has been linked with a move abroad before. It always seemed unlikely when he was first choice but with a change in circumstances over the past 18 months, he may opt for a spell overseas before the end of his professional career.
