Western Force's Super Rugby struggles continued as they suffered a ninth defeat of the season with a narrow 17-13 loss to the Blues.

First-half tries from Jerome Kaino and Tevita Li, plus a penalty and two conversions from fly-half Ihaia West, put the New Zealanders in control in Perth, but they were on the back foot early in the second period after prop Charlie Faumuina was sin-binned just before the break.

The Force, who had gone ahead through Ian Prior's early penalty, put up a fight and thought they had reduced the arrears when Kyle Godwin touched down, only to have the score ruled out for an obstruction. A try from captain Matt Hodgson, in addition to a conversion and a penalty from Ben Tapuai, brought the hosts back into the game but Blues, who also had replacement Nic Mayhew sent to the sin bin three minutes from time, hung on.
