Joe Schmidt has admitted that selecting Ireland's World Cup squad provided one of the toughest calls of his career.

Andrew Trimble was one high profile casualty of what was a six-hour selection meeting on Sunday and the Ireland head coach revealed the Ulster wing had been included in several versions of the squad.

"It was probably me that was more emotional than the players," acknowledged the Kiwi.

"I think that it's something that all the coaches have had to go through and I think they've all expressed their reservations about having to have those sort of conversations because of course they are tough.

"I think we spent six hours on Sunday. For some of those hours Andrew was coming to the World Cup with us and some of them he wasn't. That's how tight it was."
