Ballymoney win Antrim Area Blitz
The annual Year 9 Antrim area blitz took place this week at Ballymoney RFC, and once again, it was local boys Ballymoney HS who took home the silverware.
Although a number of schools were unable to attend last minute, Ballymoney HS, Limavady HS and Sperrin Integrated College turned up to compete for the title.
Despite the cold, the three teams showed great spirit as all three competed in a series of round robin matches. Ballymoney HS played Sperrin Integrated College in the first match, and although it looked tight going into the second half, the Ballymoney side seemed to get a new lease of life, scoring four unanswered tries. The final score was 20-5.
Next it was Limavady HS' turn to face the Sperrin side, and once more they were put to the test as a strong Limavady side controlled the game from the off.
Despite the scores reaching 10-10 early in the second half, luck was not on the side of the Sperrin boys and Limavady HS deservingly put a 17-10 score on the board, with one final converted score at the end.
In the final match of the day, Ballymoney HS played Limavady. Despite the game getting off to a slow start, Ballymoney got a break and managed to pull clear of the Limavady boys, the final score resting at 25-0 to Ballymoney.
Tournament organiser, Benjy Van der Byl commented: "We were delighted at the efforts displayed here today and would like to thank all 3 schools and their teachers for travelling to compete.
“This annual event is always a great way of bringing schools in the area together in a competitive environment once they have completed their six-week block of coaching.
“I'd like to thank the YDOs Scott Nelson and Shaun Bloomfield who did a great job in refereeing the matches, and Ballymoney RFC for the use of their facilities."
Final scores on the day were: Ballymoney HS 20 - 5 Sperrin Int. College, Sperrin Int College 10 - 17 Limavady HS, Ballymoney HS 25 - 0 Limavady HS
