Goal ace Amy strikes a blow for the girls

Published 23/06/2009

Eleven year old Amy Kirkpatrick has become the first girl to win the Downpatrick Youth League’s Player of the Year award in the forty year history of the league.

Amy, who attends Portavogie Primary School, plays her football for Portaferry Town Sports Club.

The Co Down girl with the cultured left foot has been with the club for three years and came up through the mini soccer programme introduced by the club.

And that development looks to be bearing fruit as the left winger notched up an amazing eighteen goals in this campaign.

She also scored in the Northern Ireland Cup when the club got to the last sixteen.

Amy is an all round athlete having played camogie as well as winning a number of medals at her school sports day.

The club has presented Amy with her playing shirt as a reminder of this historic achievement.
