Louis van Gaal labelled his Manchester United players "afraid" after the Red Devils left themselves with a hugely difficult path to the Champions League knock-out stages.

Victory over Dutch side PSV Eindhoven would have seen Van Gaal's men safely into the last 16. Instead, shot-shy United appeared to freeze on the night and could only manage a scoreless draw.

They must now beat Wolfsburg away in a fortnight's time to be sure of progressing.

"We were afraid to play the ball," said Van Gaal.

"The midfielders were dropping too much and that is why we didn't support our front players too much."

He added: "It will be very difficult now because Wolfsburg are the toughest team in our group to play against, but it is possible."
