Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards: Special delivery for Jonathan Rea and Kris Meeke

Jonathan Rea and Kris Meeke are Northern Ireland's speed kings.

They also happen to be cool, calm customers with ice in their veins when doing their thing.

There is no doubt that the pair of them are special sportsmen, so it was fitting that they were honoured with Special Awards at the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards at the Waterfront Hall last night.

Rea excelled in 2016, retaining the World Superbike title he first claimed the year before.

The man from Ballyclare dominated from the start of the season and once he took a commanding lead in the Championship, nobody was going to catch him.

He is aiming for more of the same in 2017 and given his ability there is every chance he could make it three wins in a row, which has never been done before.

In 2016, there's little doubt that Rea became one of the most respected riders on the planet.

While Rea operates on two wheels, rally star Meeke shines on four.

The Dungannon native has always been entertaining to watch in his sport.

Last year he moved to a new level with some superb performances.

He won the Rally of Portugal, securing the second World Rally Championship success of his career, and followed that up by emerging victorious from Rally Finland and in record-breaking fashion to boot - setting a pace that was the fastest FIA World Rally Championship round in history.

Like Rea, Meeke has his eyes on World Championship glory in 2017.
