Boxing clever: Michael Conlan receives the BBC NI Sports Personality of the Year Award yesterday

Boxer Michael Conlan has been named BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year for 2015 in the run up to this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year to be held in Belfast this weekend.

Earlier this year the 24-year-old became the first Irishman to win a senior World Amateur Championship title with victory in the bantamweight final over Murodjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan on a unanimous points decision in Doha.

The Ireland team captain added the world crown to his European and Commonwealth titles and has already qualified for next year's Olympic Games in Rio. He collected bronze at London 2012.

The award was judged by a panel including Belfast Telegraph Sports Editor Steven Beacom, Executive Producer of BBC Sport NI Jane Tohill, Kenny Archer of The Irish News, Richard Mulligan from The Newsletter, Margaret O'Hare, Senior Producer BBC Sport and Shane Glynn, Managing Editor BBC Northern Ireland Production.

BBC Northern Ireland Sport reporter Thomas Kane presented Conlan with the award yesterday.

"It is great to win such a prestigious award after a phenomenal year for me personally. Previous winners have included legends of their sports, and to join that elite company, is very special," he said.

Conlan topped the field to become BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year 2015 after edging out Steven Davis, Northern Ireland's exceptional football captain who guided his team to Euro 2016, and Jonathan Rea, who clinched the World Superbike Championship.

BBC's Jane Tohill said: "Once again the judging panel had a tough decision to make this year.

"It has been a remarkable year for Northern Ireland sport and the calibre of the finalists was very high. Michael Conlan's achievements in 2015 have been exceptional.

"The judging panel for BBC Sport NI are delighted to present Michael with this award.

"He continues to inspire young people in the world of boxing and we applaud his hard work and success."

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2015. Live from Belfast on BBC1, 18.50pm, Sunday.
