The 2014 Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards have been shortlisted in the prestigious Event Industry Awards, which celebrate excellence in the event sector in Ireland.

The nomination for our Sports Awards, respected throughout Northern Ireland, is in the highly competitive Best Awards Ceremony category.

The 2014 Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards raised the bar in January when we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the event, which recognises our sporting superstars, gifted youngsters, sports stars with a disability, unsung heroes, Northern Ireland legends and a whole lot more.

On the night, a star-studded audience attended the Ramada Hotel in Belfast to reflect and savour Northern Ireland's sporting achievements of the previous 12 months.

Organised by Belfast Telegraph Sports Editor Steven Beacom and the JPR PR team, led by Rosemary Allister and Sarah Weir, the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards were hosted by Jackie Fullerton and Claire McCollum and enjoyed by over 500 guests.

For the first time in the 20-year history of the event, there were joint-winners of the Sports Star of the Year award with world champion boxer Carl Frampton and world number one golfer Rory McIlroy sharing the top prize.

To mark the 20-year anniversary of the Awards, the Belfast Telegraph asked our readers to vote from a shortlist of 20 heroes for Northern Ireland's greatest sports star ever. Legendary motorcycle star Joey Dunlop came out on top with football icon George Best a close second.

Northern Ireland's record goalscorer David Healy was inducted into the Hall of Fame by Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill and his Republic counterpart Martin O'Neill and tributes were paid to the late, great rugby hero Dr Jack Kyle.

On May 27 at a glamorous awards ceremony in Dublin, the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards will be joined on the shortlist for the Best Awards Ceremony by the Bord Gais Energy Student Theatre Awards, Fingal Film Festival, KFW Irish Fashion Industry Awards 2015 and the Irish Franchise Awards.
