Gordon Watt is on the charge as big guns take aim in Ulster Open

By David Kelly

Gordon Watt came through a highly entertaining quarter-final with Connor Schelling-Tisza at the Febvre Wines Ulster Open last night as the top four seeds all progressed to the semi-finals.

Watt, of Ward Park, and Castleknock's Schelling-Tisza came up with some pulsating rallies with both men maintaining a high intensity throughout.

But Watt edged the first set 7-5 before taking an early lead in the second set which proved decisive, winning it 6-3. He will now go through to play top seed Przemek Stec of Windsor.

Stec took a competitive opening set with David Ward of Omagh 6-3. Ward's level dropped in the second set as he started to make a series of unforced errors and the Pole capitalised, winning it 6-1.

Stec looks favourite to retain his title, though number two seed Alex Watt - Gordon's brother - also showed that he is a major threat, defeating Enniskillen's Matthew McGann with ease.

Watt's serving was again to the fore as he sent down a series of bombs, winning 6-3 6-1.

Ulster's top under-16 player Aaron Stubbs now stands in his way but Watt should be too strong, despite the Donaghdee teenager enjoying a superb victory over Karl Donaldson 6-2 6-0.

Stubbs hardly put a foot wrong as he returned impressively and moved the ball around, leading Donaldson to make a series of errors. The women's singles semi-finals line-up was completed after a duel between two 14-year-olds, with Romanian Karola Bejproving too strong for Donaghadee's Lucy Octave, dropping only one game in each set.

Bejenaru takes on Newcastle's Megan McGreevy tonight.
