Jordan McKeown and Matthew Robinson are in top form
Matthew Robinson continued his terrific run at the Clubworld Travel Ulster junior championship at the Boat Club yesterday when he sent the top seed Jared Monaghan crashing out of the under-16 event.
The 14-year-old from Ballymena staged a superb comeback to beat the Enniskillen player 3-6 7-5 6-4.
After losing the first set it looked like Robinson was on his way out but he fought back brilliantly to square the match.
He trailed 4-2 in the second set and then survived a match point when losing 5-4 only to recover and reel off the next three games to force the match into a third.
Robinson seemed buoyed by that revival and he held his nerve in the final set to book his place in the quarter-finals, in which he will meet Dubliner Emmet Moynihan.
However, Robinson's progress in the under-18s was halted when he went down 6-3 6-2 to Alasdair Knox, the second seed.
There was an upset in the boys U-16 event as Peter Corrie crashed out to Evan Whitty Fitzgerald.
The Dublin visitor prevailed in three sets as he defeated the Hilden player 6-4 1-6 6-4.
Bangor's Jordan McKeown won his under-14 match with young Jack Hudson in straight sets and then – like Robinson – found himself in a thriller at under-16.
McKeown came through after two hours 40 minutes to defeat Caleb Ralston 7-5 4-6 7-6.
Meanwhile, Lucy Octave will switch her attention to retaining her under-18 singles title.
She will start her defence of the trophy this afternoon when she meets Caitlin McCullough, who completed a busy day yesterday.
Having won her doubles match at Windsor, she made the short trip to the Boat Club where she raced to victory over Sue Smith to book a date with the title holder.
McCullough wasted no time in beating the Sligo player 6-1 6-1 to complete a memorable day's work.
The top seed in the U-18 girls event, Dundalk's Ruth Copas, also begins her campaign today when she is likely to face Windsor's Laura Reid in the last eight.
