Karola Bejenaru in great form for biggest ever tennis match in Romania

By John Flack

The luck of the draw handed Karola Bejenaru a day off yesterday as she took time out to prepare for the biggest test of her professional career to date at the $25,000 tournament in her native Romania.

The 18-year-old plays Ganna Poznikhirenko in the first round today and, at 437 in the world, she will be the highest-ranked opponent the Windsor ace has ever faced.

The experienced Ukrainian is 21 years old and has played 110 main draw singles matches in her career as a professional with a 50 per cent success ratio.

"Whatever happens I have had a good week so far with three wins and I took a lot of self-belief out of my victory in the final round of qualifying," Karola explained.

"But I know I will have to play at my very best if I am to have a chance of going further in the tournament so I had plenty to work on in practice especially as I served too many double-faults in my last match," Karola concluded.
