Karola Bejenaru on all new high after surging up rankings almost 100 places
Karola Bejenaru has jumped almost 100 places in the world rankings after recent triumphs on the professional tour, and she racked up another yesterday.
The 18-year-old Windsor player added another ranking point to her tally as she reached the last-16 of a $10,000 event in the Wirral by defeating England's Jazzamay Drew 6-2 6-2 .
Bejenaru went into qualifying listed at 971 in the world but she can now boast a career-best ranking of 877. Having reached the semi-finals of a similar tournament in Glasgow, she progressed to the last 16 in Sunderland and has emulated that in the Wirral.
She said: "It was a more difficult match than the scoreline suggests and I had to work hard for the win but I am happy.
"It's been a good few weeks for me and I am very pleased about my new ranking as I want to be in the top 500 by the end of the year.
"I now feel I should be coming through qualifying in every $10k tournament."
She faces a tougher test today against fourth-seeded Londoner Harriet Dart, who is ranked 449th in the world.
