Stephen McCausland set to lock horns with pal Aaron
Club mates will become rivals in tomorrow's Co Antrim men's singles semi-final when Stephen McCausland pits his wits against Aaron Stubbs.
Both men play for Donaghadee and this will be the first time the pair will have met in a tournament over three sets. Yesterday Stubbs, who is just out of the junior ranks, overcame David Weir 6-4 6-4 while McCausland beat Portadown's Paul Calvert 7-5 3-6 6-3 to set up the showdown.
"I'm the veteran and he is the young pretender so it should be an interesting contest and we both know all about each other's game," said 32-year-old McCausland.
"We have met before in single set matches in practice and in the Windsor Superset competition but that's not the same obviously.
"I am more of a baseline player but I tried to come into the net more in the third set against Paul so I might try that against Aaron."
The other semi-final will be between top seed Karl Donaldson and third-ranked Gareth McGreevey, who yesterday defeated Justin Gilmore and Tomas Kofron respectively.
The ladie's singles quarter-finals all went with the form book as the more experienced players overcame younger opponents in straight sets.
Meanwhile, Peter Bothwell bowed out of the £11,000 ITF tournament in Frinton yesterday having picked up his first world ranking point the previous day by reaching the main draw.
The 18-year-old went down 6-3 7-6 to England's Adam Thornton-Brown but only after a battling display in the second set.
"Fair play to him, he served very well and he produced aces when it mattered so he deserved the win," said Bothwell.
"But, hopefully, I can sustain my level of performance for the Irish Futures in Dublin next week."
