5 For-dyce

Transfer-listed Daryl Fordyce helped cash-strapped Glentoran send an early warning shot across the bows of the rest of the Carling Premiership when he scored an amazing five times in the Glens' 6-1 hammering of Lisburn Distillery yesterday.

Written off for the title by many before a ball had even been kicked, Scott Young's side began the new football season with a dominant New Grosvenor romp — and Fordyce revelled in being handed an opportunity to show what he can do in attack.

“It is one of the most comfortable positions I play in,” he said.“Scott had the confidence to play me up there and I very much enjoyed it but we don't want to get ahead of ourselves, it's only one game and there's a lot more hard work to come.”

Champions Linfield began their campaign with a frustrating scoreless draw at Windsor park against Ballymena United while, on a day of debut goals, Michael Halliday helped Crusaders defeat Donegal Celtic, Mark Miskimmin netted twice in Glenavon's win at Coleraine and Conor Downey was on target as Newry City eased past Dungannon Swifts.
