Paddy Barnes has been left “gutted” after being forced to pull out of this week’s European senior championships in Turkey.
Belfast man Barnes was ready to bid for a second-successive gold, having lifted the light-flyweight crown last year in Moscow.
But hours before he was set to fly to Ankara, Barnes was told an MRI scan on an injured wrist had ruled him out of a bid to become the first Irishman to retain a European senior title.
Barnes said: “I am absolutely gutted that I will not be there to defend my title but it was simply not worth the risk.
“I feel good but the injury has not entirely responded to treatment and the advice I have been given is in my best interests."
