Former top cop accused of frail widow's murder
A former top cop has been charged with murdering an elderly widow 21 years ago.
Kenneth McConnell, 58, was remanded in custody just over a week ago accused of strangling pensioner Annabella Symington.
He is understood to be under close supervision in Maghaberry Prison after reference was made in court to his “psychiatric background”.
McConnell, a university security guard from Prospect Downs in Carrickfergus, is an ex-RUC inspector and was for many years stationed at Musgrave Street in Belfast.
The Halloween night murder of Miss Symington in 1989 shocked the community.
