I'm no thief

Sinn Fein rising star Phil Flanagan

A new Stormont MLA who was suspended from his previous job during a probe into missing cash has denied any wrongdoing.

Sinn Fein golden boy Phil Flanagan has admitted quitting his job as manager of a Carphone Warehouse store before an internal disciplinary hearing could take place into more than £2,000 petty cash expenditure.

The 26-year-old Fermanagh man says the cash was spent on daily coffees for staff and also revealed how he was battling depression at the time of the inquiry.

In an exclusive interview with Sunday Life, the rising political star admitted “it might well have been better” if he had stayed with the firm until the investigation was completed but added: “I made my decision that I wanted to leave anyway.”
