Janet's our class act

Sunday, 28 August 2011

Singing sensation Janet Devlin looks set for The X Factor final but the Co Tyrone girl took her first steps to fame thanks to Sunday Life — in our School Stars talent show last year.

As a judge that night, almost 18 months ago, I described the then 14-year-old school girl as a “better-than-the-original Taylor Swift” as she belted out a flawless rendition of one of the country singer’s hits.

But, despite her amazing performance, I didn’t place young Janet in the top three of The X Factor-style provincewide talent show, where 21 super-talented schoolchildren battled it out for glory.

I was unfamiliar with the song she had chosen to sing but the saccharine, over-wrought US ballad just wasn’t my cup of tea — the overall performance was a touch dated and, as Simon Cowell would no doubt say, “not that relevant”.

And, with many of the other contestants singing songs they had written themselves, playing instruments and dancing as well as singing, us judges agreed that Janet’s performance, while vocally flawless, lacked a little sparkle.

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Why bringing up our kids should be child's play... or maybe it's not

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
