John and Edward Grimes

John and Edward Grimes

Love them or loathe them, it’s hard to ignore them — 18-year-old Dublin twins John and |Edward Grimes are the most talked about teenagers in town right now.

Simon Cowell called them “vile little creatures who would step on their mother's head to have a hit” and promised to leave the country and sulk for six months if they win X Factor.

But just when you thought the whole country was against them it was reported last week that the unlikely pop duo TOPPED the votes on last week’s show.

It’s rock week on X Factor — and they had everyone rocking with laughter with a hilarious rap-style version of Queen’s We Will Rock You.

Dannii Minogue said: “It is Hallowe’en — and that was quite scary. I think you almost needed a sat nav to find your way back to where the lyrics were.

“I do look forward to seeing you every week but I’m not sure I’d look forward to hearing you on the radio.”

Cheryl said they dressed for the occasion and she was “rocking to that track” but Simon delivered a savage verdict.

He said: “It was night of the living dead — singing Queen out of tune, possibly destroying Queen’s career forever. Guys, I’ll credit you with tenacity, you’ve stayed in the competition, you’re thick-skinned.

“However, you cannot defend that singing tonight Louis.”

Louis responded by saying they were “two young kids living the dream, they are energetic, entertaining and exciting — this is what the music business is all about”. Last night’s show opened up with Cheryl’s act Joe McElderry singing rock anthem Don’t Stop Believing by Journey which wowed the judges.

Lucie Jones’ version of Guns N’Rose’s Sweet Child O’ Mine made Mr Nasty Simon do a U-turn in his opinion of her.

Under-fire act Danyl Johnson added to his problems with a limp version of Aerosmith’s Don't Want To Miss A Thing.

Teen heart-throb Lloyd Daniels sang Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl (And I Liked It), which left Louis Walsh up in arms because he sang a pop song on what was rock week.

Stacey Solomon was hailed as the “most popular girl in the competition” by Louis and he said he “loved her” even though he called the song choice — Keane’s Somewhere Only We know — “boring”.

Jamie Archer sang Primal Scream’s Get Your Rocks Off, while Rachel Adedeji sang U2’s One and delighted the judges, with Louis calling it the “most emotional performance of the night”. The show was brought to a close by Olly Murs singing Beatles classic Come Together.

thats what auto tune and all the amazing things technology can do is for eileen! quite a few of todays "pop singers" cant really hold a note and it doesnt stop them recording records and selling a heap!

The judges were reasonably right in most of their comments about all of the X Factor artistes, though I don't approve of Simon saying John and Edward are vile creatures etc., that's a bit strong. I think that they are a performance duo, fun to watch, I hadn't laughed at or enjoyed anything so much for ages than at their take of We will Rock You , but I would'nt like to listen to them on record, as their vocals are lacking

Gritty, moving and heroic...Billy plays captured life here

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Sunday's 30th anniversary screening of the seminal Too Late to Talk to Billy was riveting viewing. But it wasn't nostalgic viewing.

Parties need better defence in Stormont's game of two halves

Surprise, surprise. Peter Robinson has been to his first gaelic match, Martin McGuinness is heading for Windsor Park and the Ulster Unionists have scored another own goal.

Why trying to go on a diet is never really a piece of cake

Some people make New Year’s resolutions, I make lists. Every new year I determine to keep track of everything I spend and everything I eat and drink.

Scary movie? Their jaws were sore from laughing

Teenage boys love horror films and I have two who are in charge of the remote control in our house, so naturally there’s gore-a-plenty on the box most weekends. However, until recently one film was banned.
