A helicopter crash in the Mourne mountains has claimed the lives of at least four people.

The horror crash happened yesterday between Hilltown and Rostrevor just before 4pm.

MLA Jim Wells, who had been in contact with an emergency worker on the scene, said: “It was a scene of utter devastation and there was absolutely no hope of survivors.

“Unfortunately, everyone who was in that helicopter was sadly dead.”

Early reports emerging last night indicated that the helicopter may have been flying from Enniskillen, where the victims — who are not believed to be local — were taking part in a shooting or hunting trip.

Last night police said details of the crash had been passed to the Air Accident Investigation Branch.
