Moy fans paint village red and white before All-Ireland final

Tyrone fans Enda Daly, Eugene Daly, Pat 'The Guy' Hughes and Shane Colman prepare for the big game in Moy.

You've got to hand it to football fans in one Tyrone village when it comes to showing their true colours.

Moy’s devotion to their Red Hand County heroes is there for all to see as Tyrone take on mighty Kerry in the All Ireland final today.

A sea of red and white bunting, banners and flags bedeck the main square in the village right on the Tyrone-Armagh border.

And there are five good reasons for the people’s passion for the 2008 squad with Tyrone players Sean and Colm Cavanagh, Philip Jordan, Ryan Mellon and Collie Holmes all hailing from ‘the Moy’, five miles from Dungannon.

Taxis painted in team colours, vans festooned with football carvings and even statues make sure they’ve painted the town red ... and white!

One bizarre sight in the square is two bronze bull statues draped in Tyrone’s red and white colours and Kerry’s green, white and gold about to lock horns.

Said their laughing ‘owner’ Lawrence McNeice: “The idea it is that is a red Tyrone rag to the Kerry bull.”

The Moy Reproductions and Antiques proprietor was also putting the finishing touches to an extra special flower ‘bed’ — with a make-believe man lying on an old brass frame, covered in Tyrone red blooms!

“That’s the state one or two supporters might be in if Tyrone bring back ‘Sam’ again,” he said.

“I’ll be at the game with my wife Margaret, sons Dermot and Barry John, and daughter Julianna.

“It will be a real challenge to beat Kerry, but I think that Tyrone just might be the better team on the day.”

Construction workers Neil Cotter and Niall Conlon were also showing their true colours, wearing Tyrone tops as they slaved away high up on the roof of a renovated building.

Meanwhile, at the nearby Avondale Bar and Hotel, owner Vincent Daly, wife Marian and a squad of customers were in no doubt that there is a red letter day in store for Tyrone’s titans!

Said Vincent: “There are seven of us going down for the game. I was there in 2003 and 2005 when we won and I will be there to see them make it three in a row!”

Marian predicted a Tyrone victory by four points — with celebrations going on into the wee small hours at the newly renovated Avondale.

Local character Pat ‘The Guy’ Hughes is looking forward to celebrating tonight with friends who travelled from Skibbereen in Cork and Dumfries in Scotland.

And if Tyrone do triumph, the celebrations may just take on a romantic, loving dimension if past All-Ireland victories are anything to go by!

Supporter Tracey McColl was starting her celebrations early, en route to a wedding with friends Ciara Hammill, Colum McLaughlin and Maria O’Neill.

Said Tracey: “I have my son’s birthday party on Sunday. He will be three on All-Ireland final day. So, of course, we had to call him Sam!”

Added local mum Nuala McCann: “I was pregnant when Tyrone won in 2003 so my wee boy is named Eoin after player Eoin Mulligan!”
