Shameless Aaron ties the knot
Couple turn down OK! cash
Shameless star Aaron McCusker tied the knot with his long term love yesterday at a private family bash. Ulster actor Aaron married his girlfriend of six years, Jennie Sutton, at Beamish Hall, a plush country house hotel — a world away from Chatsworth, the fictional sink estate where the cult show is filmed.
But last month Aaron’s life was more like a script from Hollywood blockbuster Meet the Fockers when his and Jennie’s parents met for the first time — even though the newlyweds were engaged for almost two years!
“The meeting with the in-laws went really well,” he said. “Mum and Dad came over to Durham and it all went swimmingly.
“It’s scary enough when you meet the parents yourself but when the parents meet the parents...I was a nervous wreck!
“Not that I ever thought they wouldn’t get on but you expect it to be like Meet the Fockers.”
The Portadown man, who plays Jamie Maguire in the hit Channel 4 show, revealed he and Jennie are so family focused they declined a lucrative offer from OK! magazine who had wanted to feature their big day.
The couple exchanged vows in front of 100 family and friends, including Sean Gilder, who plays Aaron’s on-screen dad, Nick Evans and Ciaran Griffiths, who play his brothers Shane and Mickey, and Gerard Kearns, who plays Ian Gallagher. But Aaron said having his wedding in a celebrity magazine wasn’t for him.
“It’s our own special day and I don’t want OK! running about snapping celebrities,” he said.
“When it comes to putting it in the magazines they don’t even put your family in it — it would be just me and the Shameless ones and I can’t be bothered with that.
“The first thing they want to know is what celebrities are coming. The more celebrities they are going to have in the magazine the more money they offer. They were asking for a guest list before I even said yes or no.
“We don’t need the money that much — we just wanted a nice family do.”
Despite being an actor, Aaron admitted he was nervous about saying his speech yesterday. “Everyone was saying your speech will be fine because you’re an actor but I don’t like public speaking — I’m not very good at it all all,” he said.
“I was best man at my cousin’s wedding five or six years ago and I was a nervous wreck.”
On Tuesday Aaron and Jennie are jetting off to the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a 10- day honeymoon.
“Jennie can lie on the beach and I can go diving. It’s guaranteed sunshine and I think we’ll have a great time,” he said.
Then next month filming starts on the new series of Shameless.
And while Aaron will be settling down to enjoy married life, the future of his character Jamie is less certain.
“The writers are very good and I always say to them I would like to do more with the brothers,” he said.
