After the humiliation in the Faroe Islands, Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington last night warned his players — don’t you dare let me down in Belgrade.
Worthington is demanding a much improved performance on Friday in the Serbian capital against the South Africa 2010 qualifiers to make up for the two points dropped in Toftir last October.
Northern Ireland opened their Euro 2012 campaign with a win in Slovenia followed by a draw with 2006 world champions Italy at Windsor Park and should have been travelling to Serbia with seven points in the bag.
Instead, the 1-1 draw with Brian Kerr’s Faroe Islands has left Northern Ireland in fourth place in Group C on five points and they now must win difficult games away from home if they are to stand a chance of qualifying for the finals next year in Poland and the Ukraine.
