Sunday Life and Specsavers Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards 2011

Friday, 25 February 2011

Sunday Life and Specsavers have joined forces to launch a search for Northern Ireland’s unsung heroes.

We are looking for men, women and children who you believe best capture the Spirit of Northern Ireland in 2011, by selflessly serving others and being an inspiration to us all.

The unique Northern Ireland-wide search will give recognition to those whose good deeds have previously gone mostly unnoticed.

Sunday Life and Specsavers are looking for ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things to help others — people whose uplifting stories of selfless acts will touch the hearts of all who read them.

Whether for demonstrating a spirit of compassion, neighbourliness, charity, enterprise, courage or devotion, all nominations are welcome.

The winner of the overall Spirit of Northern Ireland Award will receive a fantastic prize to help thank them for all they have given to others. All those who submit nominations will automatically be submitted into a prize draw to win a £150 eyecare voucher and a VIP meet and greet night at the awards, courtesy of Specsavers.

There are four awards in total: the Specsavers Overcoming Adversity Award, the Sunday Life Unsung Hero Award, the UTV Young Persons Award and the overall Spirit of Northern Ireland Award.

Many of you reading this will already know the kind of people we are looking for as they make your lives, your neighbourhood and this country a better place.

Why my kids feel Olympics are not the real thing now

I did quite well in my school exams, but the only thing for which I can confidently say I stood out like a beacon among my fellow pupils was my record-breaking 100-metres dash.

Think your money is legal tender? Don’t bank on it

Readers have a habit of shining spotlights on unexpected issues that throw up interesting queries. Or, on occasion, a downright can of worms.

World must open its eyes and see Israel for what it is

Why pick on Israel when there's so much injustice in the rest of the world? The answer is to be found in the specific circumstances which gave rise to the launch of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) campaign in July 2005.

PR machine is driving Sinn Fein power push

Sinn Fein's ard fheis opens in Killarney tomorrow. Like most conferences held by successful political parties, it is a well-managed set-piece. It is a PR event and it is aimed at the voters watching on TV.

Why bringing up our kids should be child's play... or maybe it's not

Nurse, the screens! Yup, top experts have issued new warnings about kiddies watching nothing but tellies and computers, while real life flits by unnoticed outside.
