Surgery to give Trent a chance

On the eve of Ireland’s encounter with England, the father figure of the side, Trent Johnston, had a more pressing matter on his mind than a cricket match. I can reveal that his future as a player hung in the balance.
While his team-mates relaxed in their Dublin hotel, the 37-year-old vice captain was with a top specialist for a verdict on a knee injury which has prevented him from bowling for most of the season. He feared the worst.
Johnston returned to his hotel a relieved man. His playing days could be saved to allow him the prospect of ending his career with more World Cup glory — but it will take intricate surgery to do the trick.
Johnston was ruled out of the weather-hit England game and will miss the four-day Intercontinental Cup tie against Namibia at Stormont in 10 days' time.
