Thugs riot as Ulster weeps
Sunday, 15 March 2009
Violence exploded in Lurgan last night after a leading republican figure was arrested in connection with the murder of two soldiers in Antrim last Saturday.
Teenage rioters took to the streets after cops swooped on the home of prominent dissident republican Colin Duffy.
Masked youths hurled petrol bombs and stones at police following a series of searches in Lurgan.
They also blocked railway lines that run near the Kilwilkie estate, after Duffy was led away by cops.
The train line between Lurgan and Portadown on the main route to Dublin closed at 3.30pm yesterday due to the mob hurling petrol bombs and stones at police, mainly in the Lake Street area.
Former IRA prisoner Duffy (41) was one of three men being quizzed at the PSNI’s Serious Crime Suite in Antrim last night in relation to the murder of Sappers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar.
Declan McGlinchey (32), the son of INLA killer Dominic ‘Mad Dog’ McGlinchey, was also being held in relation to the double murder.
Their arrests brought to six the number of people being held in relation to the explosion of dissident republican violence over the past eight days.
Police were yesterday continuing to question a 20-year-old man arrested in relation to the Continuity IRA murder of police constable Stephen Carroll in Craigavon on Monday.
He was arrested as Constable Carroll’s widow Kate buried her husband following a service in Banbridge.
A youth aged 17 and a 37-year-old man who had been arrested earlier in the week in connection with Cons Carroll’s murder can be held until Tuesday, after cops were granted a five-day extension to continue questioning them.
Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde said last night that police believe there are 300 dissident republicans involved in the campaign to destroy the Northern Ireland peace process.
Sir Hugh said: “The current wisdom is that they number around 300 in a population of 1.75 million. When they try to gain any political foothold through elections, they are wiped out by decent politicians committed to moving Northern Ireland forward.”

Where are these kid's parents? No way should that be tolerated. The police should put them in the brig overnight and their parents can come and get them; on bail.

Refusing to condemn these thugs, Mark?
Avoiding the issue by (trying to) take a swipe at me instead?
You're full of surprises....

Careful now. You know if the PSNI was allowed to do what any right-minded person would do to these republican terror supporters, the do-gooders would be out in force girning about how little Paddy's rights were infringed and that a multi-million pound invesitgation should be held yadda-yadda.

As usual little 'hard' men who won't show their faces riot because they want to destroy things. Most are idiots and the majority too stupid to be able to read what people write about them. The estates that they come from have always been a breeding ground for badness and they tarnish the reputation of the good, hardworking, law abiding people of Craigavon and Lurgan.
Don't be intimidated by these people - that's what has allowed this nonsense to go on for so long. Stand together, speak out and support each other - scum like this use fear but can't handle a united response. Don't let them win!

again the challenge to the psni is to arrest them .
send out a message !!!!!!!
the tide is turning and the backing they would get from the community would be immense !!!

Those kids were probably rioting because their source of drugs had been removed. Nothing to do with republicanism.

These idiotic riots and disturbances will only add to the tension in the country at the moment. The comforting fact is that the majority of people condone this sort of behaviour, and anyone who knows of anyone who partakes in such behaviour should make their feelings clear on the issue.

How sad it must be to be so full of hatred, and suffer from such a low sense of self esteem that you must hide your head inside a bag with holes in it and throw stones like a caveman. What purpose do these "heads in a bag" lives serve?

I am disgusted at the display of violence shown here by a handful of ignorant lowlifes, towards the PSNI.
As non practicing RC I find it criminal, that these idiots can be allowed to walk the streets, and believe me I am not the only Catholic that thinks like this.
The PSNI, along with the Army and other intelligence groups, are doing a valiant job in trying to suppress, which, could be potentially a tinderbox.
Come guys do a snatch and grab on these hooligans. Get them off our streets an in jail. Im know brain surgeon, but judging by the pictures taken, I bet that these nimrods could easily be identifiable from the local community. Better still, the people of Lurgan, owe it to the people of Northern Ireland and the Families of those slain to GIVE these people up. <

It brakes my heart to see such a tiny percent of the population trying to destroy all the hard work that the rest of the good people of Northern Ireland have worked so hard for over the past years. I will be moving back to NI soon and will do everything i can to keep the peace process alive.
