Gareth McAuley has insisted Northern Ireland will have the firepower to shoot down Serbia next month after Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic was ruled out of the crunch Euro 2012 qualifier.
West Brom new boy McAuley watched on from the sidelines as Vidic was forced off during United’s narrow opening day success over the Baggies and admits the prospect of his commanding counterpart missing out never struck home.
McAuley lasted only 45 minutes in the 4-0 victory over the Faroe Islands and sat out the Premier League’s opening weekend due to illness but is ready to declare himself fit for action.
The former Ipswich Town defender knows better than most what is needed to get the better of a Serbian defence minus Vidic as he opened the scoring in Belgrade before the home side fought back to sneak a 2-1 win in March.
