Alex Higgins is dead.
I thought the four-word text on the afternoon of Saturday July 24 last year was a joke at first.
Seconds later, the texter called to confirm it.
By midnight the entire edition of Sunday Life planned for that weekend, exactly one year ago, had been changed as we planned a special tribute to the legend.
It was one of our most popular editions of the year — as Higgy was dubbed the ‘George Best of snooker’.
But a year on there’s no statue planned for the flawed genius or no plans to name an airport after him.
The snooker star spent his final days in a cramped apartment in sheltered housing on Sandy Row in south Belfast, where his body was found that day.
