English football is facing a £50m meltdown as under-fire Fabio Capello stares down the barrel of World Cup disaster.
That will be the price of the unthinkable for shame-faced England if they fail to make the last 16 knockout stage.
Capello now has 90 minutes to save his job and the reputation of English football in Wednesday’s final group showdown with Slovenia.
For Capello, at least, there will be the consolation of a £12m pay-off on his new £6m a year, two-year contract if he fails to inspire England again.
Another £40m will be lost in cash guarantees from missing out on the semi-final place FA chiefs had set Capello as his minimum target. Now it all threatens to fall apart amid whispers of splits in the England camp between senior players and manager.
