Wounded heroes carry on joking

Practical jokes were played on an Ulster soldier who lost his legs and was partially blinded in war — by fellow squaddies who turned to dark humour to come to terms with their horrific injuries.
Ranger Andy Allen, 22, was caught in a bomb blast in the notorious Helmand Province of Afghanistan in 2008 and featured in award-winning BBC1 documentary Wounded, which won a Bafta.
And fellow soldiers who spent time with him in hospital recovering from similar injuries said they coped with the ordeal of losing limbs by playing pranks on each other.
Two servicemen called Tom and Tony were interviewed last week on BBC2 motoring show Top Gear for a feature on using motorsports to overcome the horror of their injuries.
