Lord Mayor Naomi Long explains why the Tall Ships are so important to Belfast
The biggest event this city has ever seen is finally here — a realisation of an 18-year ambition of Belfast City Council.
After seven years planning with the Belfast Harbour Commissioners and other partners we are ready to host the Tall Ships and showcase our wonderful city.
The event brings into focus the changes we have undergone since 1991 — and that change continues apace.
Millions of pounds have been spent this year in refurbishing iconic buildings such as the City Hall and Ulster Museum and in completing new multi-million pound developments.
But the Tall Ships event is the icing on the cake. Belfast City Council is the largest funder of the event, contributing £1.1m to the total £2.4m costs.
But it is money well spent as our economy will be boosted by £10m and the lasting legacy of a £1m marine infrastructure has been created.
But of course no great event could be successful without its people and the people of this great city are its heartbeat.
Visitors from all over the world will receive the warm and hospitable welcome for which Belfast is renowned.
This is Belfast’s moment to shine.
