Tall Ships Belfast

Tall Ships Belfast

The rain fell but in their thousands they still they came. From early morning wet weather descended on the second day of the Belfast Maritime Festival.

The sky that had been illuminated at the end of the first night by a dazzling display of fireworks had disappeared.

Instead, the colourful light had been overshadowed by grey clouds.

Forecasters predicted rain, and they were right. But the Tall Ships visitors came prepared — waterproofs, umbrellas and wellies transformed the |landscape.

And despite the dullness of the day there was light from the carnival rides and warmth from visitors’ smiles and laughter as they enjoyed the experience.

Although not as congested as Thursday, the people crossing the footbridge across the weir never stopped.

Among them was Gerry Whyte from Antrim.

“Once you're wet, you're wet! We knew that the weather was going to be bad,so we just made sure we had waterproofs with us.

“This doesn't happen all the time, goodness knows when the next time this will come again to Belfast, so we were determined to come and have a good day, despite the weather.”

Annie Harris from Newtownabbey said she was determined to come every day.

“We were down yesterday and the weather was a lot better but it's still good fun.

“There is still a great atmosphere and, who knows, it might dry up by tonight.”
